Summary
The increase in the amount of cosmetics used means that an increasing load of pollutants goes to rivers, seas and oceans. Many of these ingredients are highly resistant to biodegradation, and their toxicological and surface active properties pose a threat to natural aquatic ecosystems. For this reason, it is necessary to consciously choose the raw materials for the production of cosmetics and to make an informed choice of cosmetics by the users. The groups of compounds that are particularly hazardous to the environment and are commonly used in cosmetics include: surfactants, mineral oils, organosilicon compounds and preservatives.

Key words: water pollution, surfactants, dimethicone, preservatives, SLS
