Summary
Deodorants are widely used cosmetics. Their task is to maintain proper hygiene by inhibiting the formation of the unpleasant smell of sweat. In such formulations, the most common ingredients are those which exhibit a bacteriostatic effect. They are aimed at reducing microbial activity. In Europe, ingredients usually used for this purpose are triclosan and farnesol. Triclosan is the phenolic micro biocide widely used in cosmetics and household chemical products. Last time its use raises a lot of controversies because of the possible toxicity to humans who are in contact with this compound and because it established its spreading into the environment and the related ecotoxicity. This study reviews new scientific information about the use and safety of the use of triclosan in deodorants. The point of the essay is the triclosan mechanism of action concerning microorganisms and presumed adverse effects on the human body.
