Summary
Introduction. Skin aging is a multifactorial process influenced by biological, environmental and lifestyle-related factors. The development of cosmetology and aesthetic medicine has provided patients with a wide range of anti-aging procedures, including both non-invasive and invasive/minimally invasive methods. The choice of a particular procedure may depend on effectiveness, safety, durability of results, cost, recovery time, specialist recommendations and the patient´s level of knowledge.
Aim. The aim of the study was to analyze the determinants of choosing invasive/minimally invasive and non-invasive procedures used in skin aging prevention.
Material and methods. A quantitative diagnostic survey was conducted using an original questionnaire. The study included 107 adult respondents. Sociodemographic variables, experience with aesthetic procedures, self-assessed knowledge and factors influencing the choice of anti-aging procedures were analyzed. Statistical analysis included the Mann-Whitney U test, Wilcoxon test and Spearman´s rank correlation coefficient. The level of statistical significance was set at p<0.05.
Results. Women constituted 77% of the study group. The largest age group was 18-25 years. Respondents more often preferred non-invasive procedures than invasive/minimally invasive ones. The most important determinants of procedure choice were safety, effectiveness, specialist recommendation and expected durability of results. A statistically significant relationship was found between self-assessed knowledge and the preferred type of procedure. No significant association was observed between sex, age, place of residence, education or income and the preferred type of procedure.
Conclusions. The choice of anti-aging procedures is multifactorial. Self-assessed knowledge, expectations regarding durability of results and trust in specialists appear to be particularly important. The results indicate the need for reliable patient education concerning the possibilities, limitations and safety of aesthetic procedures.
