Summary
Introduction. Deramatoscopy is a method of in vivo analysis of structures in epidermis, dermal-epidermal junction and in upper layers of dermis. Dermatoscopic examination is a tool used in skin lesions assessment and enables early detection of pathological changes in nevi. The aim of the paper was to determine accuracy of melanocytic nevi diagnosing with videodermatoscopy performed by a cosmetologist as well as to examine cosmetologists´ knowledge and awareness of prophylaxis and diagnostic methods enabling early detection of skin cancer.
Material and methods. Dermatoscopy was performed in patients who were referred to Plastic Surgery Out-Patient Clinic because of a skin nevus. The examined group consisted of 40 patients (30 women and 10 men) aged from 7 to 87 years, who were qualified to surgical treatment and histological examination of the excised lesions. Dermatoscopic photographs were analyzed according to the TDS scale and tentative diagnosis was set, then it was compared with the histological diagnosis. The questionnaire study was conducted among 81 practicing cosmetologists (80 women and 1 men) aged from 22 to 52 years.
Results. Comparison of the results of nevi videodermatoscopic examination with histological diagnosis showed accuracy of 75%. False dermatoscopic diagnosis was set in 4 patients, in 6 - it was impossible to assess the nevi properly because of difficulties in obtaining accurate view of the lesion or lack of experience. The research showed that the most of the examined cosmetologists (85%) regularly examine skin nevi in their patients.
Conclusions. 1. Cosmetologist using dermatoscope can diagnose the features suggesting malignant skin lesion with high accuracy. 2. Cosmetologists with master´s degree significantly more frequently use dermatoscope in everyday practice than those with bachelor´s degree. 3. There is a need to educate cosmetologists about necessity of informing patients about atypical nevi.
