Summary
Introduction. Aloe Arborescens extract has antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, regenerating and light-protective properties and 5% ointments may be applied in the treatment of dermatomycoses. Pigments such as naphthaquinone, shikonin and alkannin and their derivatives are the main constituents of Lithospermum erythrorhizon Sieb. et Zucc. Shikonin is widely used as a drug of strong antibacterial activity. This raw material is applied in Asian medicine for the treatment of dermatitis.
Aim. A technology of a few ointments with aloe and extracts of Chinese herbs was worked out taking into account the synergistic action of aloe, Scutellaria baicalensis and Lithospermum erythrorhizon.
Material and methods. The technology of a few model ointments with aloe, scullcaps and red-root gromwell was worked out. The analysis of aloenin pharmaceutical availability in the tested ointments was carried out with the static method based on the dialysis of an active substance through Tomophan-type selectively semipermeable membrane in Mutimer apparatus. Direct spectrophotometric method was used in the chemical analysis to determine active substances converted to aloenin. Pharmaceutical availability of the tested ointments was determined biopharmaceutical parameters i.e. constant of release rate and half-time of release. The concentration of baicalin released from the model ointments was determined on the basis of the established calibration curve for Scutellaria baicalensis.
Results. Aloenin content in the analyzed material allow to include this compound among the group of compounds dominating in the chemical composition of Aloe Arborescens plants grown in greenhouses of Herbal Works ´Herbapol´ S.A.in Klęka. The usefulness of the suggested ointment vehicles was also tested on the basis of active substances release from complex model aloe ointments containing extracts of Chinese herbs.
Conclusions. The selected Tomophan-type dialysis membrane gave comparable results in the determinations of pharmaceutical availability and it is very useful in the testing of aloenin pharmaceutical availability from an ointment and in the determination of the concentration of the set of active substances released from the extracts of Chinese herbs from the model ointments. Propylene glycol is a good promoter of aloenin and active substances release from Chinese herbal extracts from model ointments.
