Summary
In recent years, interest in natural substances and their use in cosmetic technology greatly increased. From this point of view, a grapevine (Vitis vinifera) seems to be a particularly important raw material that can be successfully used as an ingredient for cosmetic products. It contains many valuable components, especially polyphenolic compounds. The main polyphenols, present in grapes and their seeds, are oligomeric proanthocyanidins and resveratrol. The grapevine polyphenols are strong natural antioxidant compounds, that present anti-inflammatory, antibacterial and antihistaminic properties. Cosmetics based on this plant maintain appropriate level of skin´s moisture and theirs high content of antioxidants slows down the aging process. These products by enhancing collagen structures increase elasticity, firmness and smoothness of the skin. Active ingredients of the grapevine also affect the good condition of blood vessels, stimulate blood microcirculation, accelerate tissue regeneration and wound healing. In addition, grapes are a valuable source of compounds that protect the skin against the harmful effects of external factors, including UV. They show promising results in the chemoprevention of skin cancer, induced by this kind of radiation. Grape seed oil also provides beneficial effects on the skin. It strengthens the lipid barrier of the epidermis and normalizes the sebaceous glands. Nowadays, both the oil and the extracts from grapevine are essential components for skin care cosmetics. They are also increasingly used in the adjuvant treatment of several dermatological disorders.
