Summary
In face of the increasing incidence of skin cancer, it is recommended to use sunscreens with a broad spectrum of protection. In order to ensure protection in the range of 290 nm to 400 nm, physical or chemical filters are used. Raw materials and substances of natural origin exhibiting UV absorbing properties are used to limit the amount of chemical filters in cosmetics. These substances were found to act as antioxidants, anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory agents, which provide protection against the harmful effects of exposure to UV irradiation. The paper summarizes current knowledge about raw materials and substances of natural origin showing photoprotective activity potential. Most of the tested natural substances and plant extracts, however, have too low sun protection index (SPF) to be used alone in sun creams, but they can be a valuable ingredient of low SPF creams for everyday use.

Key words: sun protection, physical UV filters, ferulic acid, antioxidants, natural raw materials with photoprotective effect
