Summary
Brown algae (Phaeophyta) are multicellular algae, most often with a highly organized structure of the thallus, growing in the seas. The characteristic brown color of their cells is given by fucoxanthin. The cell wall one is double-layered - the inner cellulose and outer pectin. Pectin layer contains, among others large, amounts of alginic acid. The storage materials are fats, laminarin and mannitol. The rich chemical composition of the thalli determines their various cosmetic and healing effects, hence they are used in preparations, cosmetic treatments and even dietary supplements. The work contains information on the use of 14 species of brown algae in cosmetics.
