Summary
The basic informations about vitamin C - its physico-chemical properties, biogenesis pathways in plant and animal organisms and the role in the physiological processes in humans were collected in the work. Mechanisms of its antioxidative activity were presented. The important role and use of vitamin C in cosmetology were discussed. The main part of the work was devoted to the botanical and chemical characteristics of three exotic plant species: Malpighia glabra (acerola), Myrciaria dubia (camu-camu) i Carica papaya (papaya), whose fruits are a rich, natural source of vitamin C. The fruits of these plants are making a career in Europe and Poland as new attractive cosmetic, pharmaceutical and health-promoting raw materials. The work is enriched with valuable information from the CosIng database regarding vitamin C derivatives and various forms of raw materials from the characterized plant species approved for use in the cosmetics industry.
