Summary
Introduction. Hydrophobic skin protection preparations should be effective in protection of skin against wet work environments and they must meet relevant consumer criteria to be attractive on the market. Due to the purpose of use, their recipes are based mostly on fatty substances with high melting temperatures and/or high viscosity, which makes it difficult to spread on the skin and gives tough consistency.
Aim. The aim of present study was attempt to assess the quality of hydrophobic protective preparations, taking as criteria their consistency and occlusion ability.
Material and methods. Preparations (emulsions and oinments) available on the market and selected ointment bases were examined. Using the instrumental methods, their spreading ability, flow curves, yield point, viscosity and water vapor permeability were determined. The obtained results were compared with the results of sensory analysis.
Results. The conducted experimental research showed that consistency is a very important parameter determining the quality of hydrophobic protection preparations. If consistency is too tough, it will be difficult to squeeze out preparation of the package and spread on the skin. If is too soft, it will not be able to create a permanent mechanical barrier on the skin. Consistency is also a feature that determines consumers´ preferences. The soft consistency make it easier to spread protection products on the skin. It causes that cosmetics can be quickly absorbed without greasiness and stickiness effect.
Conclusions. Consistency affects the protective ability of the preparation, its regular use and attractiveness to the potential consumer. It is one of the determinants of quality hydrophobic protective preparations. By examining the consistency of products, we can design the recipe for which there is no reason to choose between the effects of the cosmetic and the pleasure of using it.
