Summary
Nails are not only an aesthetic element, but also fulfill many useful functions that make everyday life easier and protect distal parts from damage. Nail plate diseases are an epidemiological, therapeutic and social problem. Nail disorders related to changes in nail shape, color and structure are a frequent component of many dermatoses or may be a symptom of systemic disorders. Extremely important to the clinical work of podiatrist is the knowledge of anatomy and terminology of the nail unit, because it allows recognition of pathological conditions, as well as understanding their pathogenesis.
