The Herbal Pharmacy of the Brothers Hospitallers´ Convent in Łódź recommends a herbal mixture for supportive use in the treatment of the liver. The herbal mixture according to the Bonifraters´ prescription includes pharmacopoeial medicinal plants in the form of herbs, fruits, leaves, roots and inflorescences. The patient should prepare a decoction from the mixture according to the enclosed "method of use" and drink it warm before meals 3 times a day. Aim. The scope of the conducted research concerned primarily the determination of the physicochemical parameters of the decoction, i.e. electrical conductivity, viscosity and surface tension. For the classes of phytochemicals included in the herbal mixture, the correlation between the logarithm of the distribution coefficient was investigated and the solubility parameter calculated for their structures. Material and methods. The research material was the "Herbal mixture used as a supporting agent in the treatment of the liver" and its galenic forms and prepared decoctions. Electrical conductivity, viscosity and surface tension were determined using pharmacopoeial methods and those recommended by Polish Standards. The extraction efficiency and water and volatile components loss during the herb grinding process were estimated using the gravimetric method. Results. Electrical conductivity and surface tension determined in the decoction indicate that it does not contain a significant amount of dissociable electrolytes and the surface tension does not exceed the physiological barrier. The determined basic viscosity and hydrodynamic values indicate that the share of macromolecular structures decreases in the decoction with the grinding of the material. It was confirmed that a significant part of the phytochemicals contained in the decoction are in the hydrophilic range of the solubility parameter and remains in the form of a real solution in the decoction. Conclusions. As a result of the conducted research, the content of phytochemicals (dry extract) in the recommended volume of decoction was determined, which constitutes the basis for carrying out pre-formulation work on the dosed form of the preparation. The determined extract efficiency makes it possible to produce a dry extract from the herbal mixture and to develop a solid oral dosage form of the preparation - a tablet with a pharmacopoeial disintegration time.
