Characteristics of venoms of selected snake species and the possibilities of their use in pharmacotherapy and cosmetologyJustyna Żwawiak, Aleksandra Dobek, Lucjusz Zaprutko, Anna Pawełczyk Katedra i Zakład Chemii Organicznej Uniwersytetu Medycznego im. Karola Marcinkowskiego w Poznaniu Summary Snake venom is a heterogeneous chemical mixture, highly stable to atmospheric conditions or other exogenous substances. It consists of a wide range of free amino acids and oligopeptides, low-molecular-weight carbohydrates, metal ions, lipids, amines and nucleosides. There is much evidence confirming the positive effect of venom components on the results of treatment of various diseases. Its cytotoxicity, neurotoxicity and hemotoxicity are most often used in pharmacotherapy. Snake venom components have also found application in cosmetology. Currently, the most known and well-characterized active substance synthesized on the basis of snake venom is the SYN-AKE peptide, which fits into the anti-ageing trend, which is used in local preparations such as creams, serums and masks.
