Summary
Ornamenting the body with body piercing is observed worldwide. The body piercing procedures are not free from health risks. The aim of this research is to present a spectrum of complications after auricle piercing in patients treated in the Department of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery of Medical University in Lodz. In the Department, in years 1998-2008, 52 patients were treated because of complications after performing ear piercing. The subjects´ ages ranged from 7 to 62 (the mean age was 25.3). The most common complication in the examined group was traumatic laceration of the earlobe, other complications included keloid and hypertrophied scars formation, embedded backings of the earrings in both of the earlobes and deformation of the top of auricle. Complications after body piercing are observed in adults, as well as in children, in whom the decision of piercing performance should be carefully considered and their parents should be informed about the health risk associated with this kind of "body ornamentation".
