Aloe creams with cignolin (anthralin)Teresa Bujak, Marian M. Zgoda, Kazimiera H. Bodek Katedra Farmacji Stosowanej Uniwersytet Medyczny w Łodzi Summary Aloe demonstrates multidirectional therapeutic activity conditioned by diverse chemical composition. Aloe extract manifests antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, regenerating and light-protective properties. Cignolin is a derivative of natural chrysarobin obtained from the bark of the Andira araroba tree. Cignolin was used for the treatment of eczema, mycoses, lichen and skin diseases which required application of reducing drugs (reductiva). Cignolin antipsoriatic activity was detected in the 1930s. It is the basic medication used in the treatment of psoriasis. A technology of a few aloe creams with cignolin has been worked out taking into account synergism of aloe and cignolin activity. Aim. The aim of the study was to determine pharmaceutical availability of aloenin in freshly produced creams containing dry extract from fresh Aloe Arborescens Mill. Leaves. The effect was also estimated of the vehicle components used in creams on aloenin release from the tested model creams. Material and methods. A technology of formulation of model aloe creams with cignolin was worked out. An analysis of aloenin pharmaceutical availability in the tested creams was carried out with the static method based on the dialysis of an active substance through semipermeable Tomophan membrane in Mutimer apparatus. A direct spectrophotometric method was used in quantitative chemical analysis to define active substances converted to aloenin. Pharmaceutical availability of the tested creams was determined with biopharmaceutical parameters i.e. constant of release (k) and half time of release (t50%). Results. The content of aloenin in the analyzed model formulation allows to include this structure to the group of compounds dominating in chemical composition of Aloe Arborescens plants grown in greenhouses of Herbal Works ´Phytopharm´ S.A. in Klęka. Moreover, on the basis of aloenin release from aloe creams, the usefulness of the suggested vehicles applied in the model creams was investigated. Conclusions. The selected Tomophan dialysis membrane gave comparable results in the determinations of pharmaceutical availability and it is very useful in the testing of aloenin pharmaceutical availability from the investigated creams. The cream vehicle components affected aloenin release from the tested creams. Key words: Aloe, Aloe Arborescens, aloe creams, cignolin, pharmaceutical availability, aloenin |
