Summary
Beauty care is an area of life inextricably connected with the man and accompanying him constantly, however not much attention is paid to its origins. In Polish literature, we find little mention of cosmetics and beauty culture. So far, this knowledge, quite fragmented and rudimentary, was known only to a small group of enthusiasts. This article is the beginning of a larger whole, which will give readers an insight into the history of cosmetology and interesting facts often closely associated with political history, geographical discoveries and medicine.

Key words: history of cosmetics, Mesopotamia, vegetable dyes, perfumes, fragrances, medicinal plants
