European cranberry (Vaccinium oxycoccos L.) - characteristics, biological properties and its application in cosmetology

Summary
European cranberry (Vaccinium oxycoccos L.) is our native shurb derived from family Ericaceae. Cranberry´s fruit and leaves, characterized by an interesting composition of active compounds, constitute a raw material appreciated by the food, pharmaceutical and cosmetic industry. For a long time known and appreciated in medicine because of its preventive properties, cranberry is currently also recommended in the treatment of cold and avitaminosis as well as as a refreshing and strengthening the immune system remedy. It is also used in the treatment of urinary tract infections, cardiovascular diseases, dental and periodontal diseases and in the prevention of stomach ulcers.
Numerous scientific studies provide more and more data which prove that the use of cranberry has antibacterial, antiviral, antifungal, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and anticancer effects. Furthermore, it has also detoxifying, diuretic, anti-edema and metabolism regulating properties. Cranberry fruit, a rich source of vitamins, minerals and polyphenols, have been also valued by the cosmetics industry. Cranberry protects the skin from the adverse effects of external factors, stimulates collagen synthesis and strengthens the immune system of the skin. It is also credited with having nourishing, moisturizing, cleansing, smoothing and brightening effects on the skin. However, there is a need for further studies to confirm the beneficial health and beauty properties of European cranberry, its importance in the care of the skin and the use possibilities of this valuable plant in cosmetology.
