Summary
Antibacterial properties of silver have been known for millennia. Already in ancient times used his features by storing food and water in silver vessels and providing silver wounds and ulcers. Silver also were used as a universal therapeutic agent because of the broad spectrum of activity against pathogens such as bacteria, viruses, fungi, or protozoa. With the discovery in 1928 of penicillin by Alexander Fleming, and the advent of antibiotics, the use of silver is limited due to the high costs associated with its production. Formulations containing nano-silver particles are used in cosmetics according to their antimicrobial activity.
