Summary
Introduction. Essential oil derived from Eucalyptus globulus is a valuable ingredient of anti-acne cosmetic preparations due to its antiseptic activity. On the other hand the concentration of essential oil has a significant influence on skin condition and, due to its strong, characteristic smell, on consumers´ preferences. If used in too high concentrations, eucalyptus oil might cause contact dermatitis.
Aim. The aim of the following study was to develop the formulations of light body creams containing eucalyptus globulus essential oil and to evaluate its optimal - in terms of safety and consumers´ preferences - concentration. The additional aim was to evaluate the influence of oil concentration on some physicochemical properties of prepared emulsions.
Materials and methods. Subjected emulsions containing eucalyptus essential oil in concentrations 0.5, 1.0 and 2.0% were obtained on basis of author´s formula. The blind sample containing no addition of essential oil was prepared as a reference. Samples were tested for safety of use and influence on skin hydration. Physicochemical parametres such as viscosity, stability and sensoric properties of the samples were also evaluated.
Results & Conclusion. Conducted analysis demonstrates that Eucalyptus Globulus essential oil might be used as multifunctional ingredient of skin care cosmetics. It has been shown, that the concentration of oil does not have an impact on stability of emulsions. To obtain multi-faceted activity of oil in emulsion, concentration have to be carefully established. Emulsion containing 0,5% wt. of essential oil ensured the highest and long-lasting level of skin hydration. It has also been highly rated by consumers.
