Influence of isotretinoin treatment on mood changesAnna Piotrowska, Olga Czerwińska-Ledwig, Wanda Pilch Zakład Biochemii i Podstaw Kosmetologii, Akademia Wychowania Fizycznego w Krakowie Summary Isotretinoin (INN) is a highly effective drug from the group of retinoids, it is often prescribed for the treatment of acne. The use of INN is unfortunately burdened with the risk of wide spectrum of possible side effects. In this paper, the authors reviewed the literature available in databases of scientific articles on the adverse effects of retinoid intake, with particular emphasis on the neuropsychiatric disorders. The aspects related to the quality of life in terms of occurrence of mood disorders induced by treatment, cause and effect relationships between the use of INN and the occurrence of the described effects, the prognostic factors of their occurrence and their biochemical mechanisms were taken into account. The risk of neuropsychiatric effects after transdermal administration was also assessed. The ambiguous results of this review indicate the need for further research into the epidemiology and mechanisms of side effects of retinoids. The unquestionable conclusion, however, is that a person undergoing INN treatment should be the subject of particular attention of both a dermatologist and a cosmetologist. This allows for the early detection of affective disorders and referring the patient to a psychiatric or psychological consultation.
