Currently, more and more research is available with using this method in cosmetology and dermatology. Prolototherapy involves the injection of a small amount of irritant agent to stimulate cell proliferation. Irritant agents solutions most often contain dextrose (d-glucose), a natural glucose function normally found in the body, but may also contain combinations of polidocanol, manganese, zinc, growth hormone, glycerin or phenol. Autologous cell solutions, bone marrow or stem cells as well as combinations of the above mentioned substances are also used for injection. Prolototherapy treatment is aimed at eliciting a limited inflammatory response that triggers cellular repair processes. Scientific evidence suggest the role of therapy in generating growth tissues, but the exact mechanism of action is not yet fully understood. Current scientific reports suggest that prolotherapy may improve the healing of chronic wounds and acne scars. However, the quality of the obtained data is still low. There is currently a lack of high-quality randomized research in the field of skin therapy, needed for the recommendation and use of this method in cosmetology. Well-designed clinical trials are required. Perhaps in the future it will be a real alternative therapy for various skin defects.
