Baltic amber (succinite) is widely used in skin care cosmetics, although its structure has not been fully explained. One of the potential cosmetic applications is related to the antioxidant activity of the amber extract obtained by a new method developed at Laboratory of Technological Processes of the Warsaw University of Technology (LTP PW). Aim. The aim of the study was to verify, in natural conditions, the antiradical activity of prepared amber extract and to test its cosmetic suitability further. Material and methods. The method was based on the influence of cosmetics containing tested extract on skin irritated with methyl nicotinate. Measurements were provided by a chromameter. The influence of age and time on the color of the skin treated with the above-mentioned cosmetics and methyl nicotinate was examined on a group of test subjects. Results. It was found that cosmetics with amber extract reduce nicotinate-induced redness and have a positive effect on the yellowness of the skin. These effects occur with an unavoidable delay, depending on the physicochemical form of the cosmetic. Conclusions. The studied amber extract is potentially suitable for the production of care cosmetics designed for skin prone to irritation. The use of these cosmetics for ageing skin requires further research.
