Hyaluronic acid is a polysaccharide that is used in preparations serving as fillers in aesthetic medicine treatments. Over the course of medical studies, fillers are not included in programme, while students encounter the concept of hyaluronic acid in the histology and biochemistry classes. Despite the fact it was first used mainly in veterinary medicine and orthopedics, nowadays it is very popular in the offices of plastic surgeons and cosmetologists. Aim. The goal of the study is to investigate the opinion of male medical students on treatments with hyaluronic acid. Material and methods. A questionnaire was carried out on 122 students of the Faculty of Medicine at the Medical University of Lodz in order to examine their knowledge and opinions on the use of hyaluronic acid in medicine. Results. A significant difference has been shown in the comparison of lip augmentation and scar removal for a woman, and in the case of volumetry and scar removal for a man, in favor of treatments reducing the visibility of scars. Conclusions. The respondents see a greater need for the use of hyaluronic acid in treatments reimbursed by the National Health Fund, than in paid treatments, like face volumetry and lip enlargement. Students, if they undergo aesthetic medicine treatments, declare openness in this case. Key words: hyaluronic acid, medical students opinion, lip augmentation, face volumetry, scar removal |
