Summary
Positive effect of nicotinamide therapy have been observed in patients suffering from such skin disorders and in cardiovascular. Schizophrenia, psychosis and dementia can also be treated and managed with niacin therapy. The aim of this paper is to evaluate potential risks of niacin supplementation in Polish patients and show how to minimize its adverse health effects.
Most of the supplements that are available in Poland contain safe doses of niacin. Therefore, niacin supplementation or therapy based on niacin containing drugs or supplements is safe, provided that suggested dosing is strictly observed. Providing patient education prior to niacin therapy or supplementation is optimal for enhancing medication adherence. Improved knowledge of adverse effects of niacin and how to eliminate them is of crucial importance to patients. It can guarantee their safety and minimize the risk of therapy discontinuation.

Key words: niacin supplementation, adverse effects of niacin, flushing effect
