Summary
Introduction. Striae gravidarum are the most frequent pregnancy-associated skin conditions and they cause a common aesthetic problem.
Aim. The aim of this paper is to assess the risk factors of the striae gravidarum occurrence as well as to present the subjective assessment of the effectiveness of preventive measures taken by the pregnant women.
Material and methods. A special questionnaire was prepared for the purpose of the study and filled in by 50 women who bore one child or were multiparas. All participants answered questions related to: their age (at the time of examination and during pregnancies), history of striae before pregnancy, occurrence of striae gravigarum during pregnancy, their characteristics and presence of factors associated with striae development. Moreover, each respondent was asked about using strie prophylaxis and its effectiveness.
Results. Statistical analysis disclosed that striae were found significantly more frequently in women with history of striae before gestation (p=0.022; p<0.05) and in those with family history of these lesions (p=0.042; p<0.05). We found that younger women were less likely to develop striae (p<0.05). Significant difference between birth weight in those with and without striae was observed (3.54 kg vs. 2.7 kg, p<0.05).
Conclusion. This study confirmed the influence of genetic factors and individual tendency to stretch marks on striae gravidarum occurrence. The current research did not validate efficacy of topical antistriae products.
