Summary
Introduction. Cigarette smoking is a serious addiction which negatively affects human organism. Significant correlation between smoking and skin condition has been observed for years. Smoker´s skin is pale, grey, thin and dry.
Aim. The aim of this study is to determine the influence of cigarette smoking on the skin condition in the group of smoking and non-smoking students from Medical University of Lodz.
Material and method. The study was performed in the group of 120 students from Medical University of Lodz (30 smoking females and 30 non-smoking females, and 30 smoking males and 30 non-smoking males). In each person the measurement of transepidermal water loss (TEWL) was performed.
Results. The mean value of transepidermal water loss in smoking females was higher than in non-smoking women (9,22 and 7,38, respectively). The similar relation was found in male group, the value of TEWL in smoking men was 10,55 while in non-smoking - 7,87. The obtained results were statistically significant.
Conclusions. Cigarette smoking increases transepidermal water loss, which causes that epidermis is less humidified. This may result in skin aging acceleration. Students´ education about influence of smoking on skin condition is necessary.

Key words: transepidermal water loss, cigarette smoking
