Molecular mechanisms of skin aging and methods of protectionMirosław Sopel Instytut Kosmetologii, Wyższa Szkoła Fizjoterapii z siedzibą we Wrocławiu Summary The manifestation of skin aging are wrinkles, loss of elasticity and altered pigmentation. These changes are due to internal factors of aging, as well as the influence of surrounding environment. The basic mechanisms of skin aging pathogenesis are still not fully understood. However, we can say that that it is a complex process involving many metabolic pathways. Recent studies indicate some significant biological processes involved in the skin aging such as changes in the DNA repair process, destabilization of mitochondrial functions, destruction of the cell cycles, and changes in the composition of the extracellular matrix. The study of skin aging biology would allow for more accurate understanding of this process and the optimization of anti-aging strategies. Understanding of the molecular basis of skin aging would form the basis for design of any new therapies and cosmetics.
