Assessment of knowledge of solarium workers in silesia on radiation and UV harmfulness

Summary
Background. Tanning devices emit ultraviolet radiation which can cause damages to the skin, the ocular and immune systems.
Aim. The aim of this study was to verify knowledge of employees working in tanning salons about UV radiation and its possible side effects of artificial tanning.
Materials and methods. The survey was carried out among staff working in selected tanning salons in Silesian Province. Tested group accounted for 85 women. Respondents provided answers to questions of copyright questionnaire relating to knowledge about UV radiation and its harmfulness, recommendations, rules and behavior regarding customer service.
Results. The majority (62%) of respondents did not know that both sun and artificial tanning is equally damaging. Also, the majority of respondents (53%) did not know that the excessive tanning might be associated with the skin damage, eyesight deterioration and immune system disturbances (the most correct knowledge in this regard had participants with secondary education). In addition, 55% of participants did not use in their work the list of photosensitizing drugs, and only 47% would not permit use the solarium customer who has not attained 18 years of age.
Conclusions. Staff working in tanning salons in Silesian Province have inadequate knowledge about UV radiation and its harmful effects on human health. Furthermore law expertise in this regard is also insufficient. It seems appropriate to develop and implement the legal regulations concerning the safety of tanning equipment usage as well as appropriate staff training.
