Summary
Foot ulcers are a serious common complication of diabetes, which, in extreme cases, may lead to foot amputation. During treatment, it is important to apply appropriate dressings to prevent the development of infection and to facilitate proper wound healing. This paper reviews selected substances of natural origin that are either currently used or tested to facilitate treatment of chronic wounds, such as diabetic foot ulcers, and therefore also of interest to podiatry. The beneficial properties of honey, propolis, modified flax fibers, chitosan and fibroin are discussed, with special attention paid to their broad spectrum of antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory activity, as well as the ability to maintain optimal conditions to facilitate proper wound healing.

Key words: honey, propolis, modified flax fibers, chitosan, fibroin, dressings, diabetic foot ulcers
