Summary
Contact allergies to cosmetics are becoming more and more common. One of the reasons is a presence of the preservatives added to cosmetics to increase their durability. EU authorities responsible for the safety of cosmetics treat the problem of allergy sometimes with improper attention. An example of this is problem of the isothiazolinones. Until recently, these were one of the most popular preservatives, despite numerous signals about allergenic activity of these compounds coming from serious scientific centers. Methylisothiazolinone and methyl chloroisothiazolinone, initially considered to be completely safe, were gradually withdrawn from cosmetics, until finally at the beginning of 2018 were completely banned. Nevertheless, methylisothiazlonone and other isothiazolinone derivatives that cause cross-sensitization are still used in household chemistry products. This is one of the causation of the so called epidemic allergy to cosmetics.
